'Phrase Teaser'

Hi all!

I just want to share with you a quote that many companies use to market their products.

Have you realized that most advertisements say that the new product is "new and improved"? Has it occurred to you that if something is new, then there has never been anything before it. If it is an improvement, then there must be something before it and therefore, it cannot be new.

What do you guys think?

Love,

Edwin C

Hi Edwin. That's a great observation. I hadn't thought about that before. Perhaps there's an ellipsis and what they really mean is something like "a new and improved version of the product"? That would be okay, right?
But your comment has reminded me that I've always been bugged by advertising taglines such as "it just tastes better" or "the healthier choice". I always feel like asking "better than what?"

Thank you Dr Tang for the comment. I personally feel that advertising is taking a drastic (allow me to use the word 'desperate') turn as the years pass. I'm glad that someone actually shares the same sentiments regarding these taglines. Mayve they should hire me to add new taglines for them (haha)!
